Symbian OS platform security, introduced in S60 3rd Edition, brings new levels of device and application security to the S60 platform. To help mobile developers, Forum Nokia has launched a new page on Symbian OS security and Symbian Signed. A trusted computing base enables data caging, a private secure folder for every application, and a capability model that ensures an application is trusted before it can use sensitive APIs. Many applications will not need platform security capabilities or will use those the customer can grant trust to. These applications can be signed with a certificate the developer creates. To take advantage of the most-secure APIs, many applications will benefit from Symbian Signed, an industry-supported certification program for Symbian OS applications. Even where Symbian Signed is not needed to access platform security capabilities, it has value in allowing developers to take advantage of the confidence it provides mobile customers. Symbian Signed is also required for some sales channels. For mobile customers, platform security means they can install applications with confidence; for developers, this customer confidence will lead to more applications’ being purchased.
