Samsung's SPH-A920 is one of the initial EV-DO handsets that Sprint launched late last year for their then brand new Power Vision 3G network. It is sold using the Sprint MM-A920 model name. The A920 can be used for accessing any number of Sprint Power Vision services, not the least of which are the on-phone music store and live TV streaming video feeds.
When combined with its reasonable design, a 1.3 megapixel camera, and stereo speakers, the A920's 3G services really shine.
Physical Aspects
Physically, the MM-A920 is rather average in size and weight for a CDMA clamshell handset. It measures 93mm 54mm x 26mm (3.7" x 2.1" x 1") in size and weighs a respectable 113g (4.0oz). The dark blue body has a nice matte finish that resists finger prints and smudges, as well as hides scratches and scuffs well - should you drop your device by accident, as I did. A pair of stereo speakers adorn either end of the clamshell's hinge, and a dedicated music control pad is to be found on the front of the device, beneath the external 65k color STN display and the 1.3 megapixel camera and flash. A volume control can be found on the left side of the A920, above the 2.5mm stereo headset jack. A dedicated camera shutter button and the TransFlash memory card slot are on the right side. Apart from the lanyard loop up top and the data/power port on the bottom, there is not much else to the A920 until you open it up.
Once opened, the very usable and spacious keypad and various control keys can be accessed. I am quite fond of the numeric keypad, and particularly fond of the bright white back lighting used on the keys. The 5-way d-pad controller is large and easy to use, with a separate center select button. Dedicated speakerphone and "back" buttons take their place with the red and green call control keys and dual softkeys around the d-pad.
Physically the MM-A920 seems rock solid. All of the controls function quite well, and the clamshell mechanism itself opens easily and closes very solidly. The MM-A920 is a phone I expect could take quite a bit of abuse.
